Alimony Attorney in Union/Mecklenburg County

Serving Union and Mecklenburg Counties including Weddington and Matthews

Spousal maintenance, also commonly referred to as alimony, may be an issue in your divorce if one spouse was the primary income earner. After the divorce, the lower income earner may need income from the working spouse until they can become self-supporting. Alimony is not automatic. If you think spousal support will be part of your North Carolina divorce, you need an experienced spousal support attorney to assert your rights and protect your interests.

Will your divorce involve spousal support? Contact Epperson Law PLLC in Weddington, North Carolina, at 704-288-1359, toll free at 888-805-8163, and schedule a consultation with an experienced alimony attorney in Union/Mecklenburg Counties.

Alimony is based on the needs of the nonsupporting spouse and on the supporting spouse's ability to pay. A spouse may be awarded permanent alimony that is in effect until death or remarriage, or until the nonsupporting spouse cohabitates with another. A spouse may also be awarded post-separation support (PSS) that is a temporary support awarded during the pendency of the divorce process.

Whether you or your spouse committed adultery may have an effect on the spousal support award. If the supporting spouse cheated, he or she will have to pay alimony. If the nonsupporting spouse cheated he or she is precluded from receiving alimony. If they both committed adultery, then they are back at the beginning and the court determines the need and the ability to pay.

Can Spousal Support Be Modified?

A spouse can always ask the court to modify spousal support based on a substantial change of circumstances (either up or down). If you need to modify spousal support, contact an experienced spousal support lawyer today.
