North Carolina judge to rule on international child custody case

Determining child custody in court is often a contentious issue, in which judges are forced to determine which course of action is in the best interests of the child. Under normal circumstances, this decision is difficult enough. Add international complications, in which those involved must determine the children's living situation in an unfamiliar country, and the trial can become very complicated indeed. But that is the situation faced by one North Carolina judge, who must now decide whether to allow three children to be adopted by a foster family, or to deport them their father's home country.

New Mecklenberg County policy hopes to reduce domestic violence

Domestic violence is a serious problem in North Carolina, one that can be difficult of police officers to stamp out. Domestic abuse often takes place in the privacy of the home, and it often goes unreported. Sadly, in many cases, domestic violence can quickly progress to homicide, leaving friends and family stunned and devastated.

National unpaid child support tops $100 billion

It's no secret that unpaid child support is a huge problem in North Carolina and across the country. Every month, thousands of single-parent families are forced to make do with less, and thousands of non-custodial parents slide deeper into debt. Many North Carolinians may not know the massive extent of the problem, however. New data from the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement has revealed that the country's non-custodial parents owe approximately $108 billion in back child support payments.

"Modern Family" star stuck in the middle of a custody battle

North Carolina fans of ABC's "Modern Family" may be interested to hear of the real-life child custody drama that one young actor's family has been caught up in. Ariel Winter, a 14-year-old star of the show, was removed from her mother's custody after the girl's adult sister alleged that their mother was abusing Ariel both physically and emotionally. Ariel's sister is now petitioning for full guardianship, asking the courts to permanently remove Ariel from her mother's custody.
