Former NBA player arrested for delinquent child support

Many divorced parents in Charlotte depend heavily on child support payments in order to provide the necessities of life to the children in their care. When one parent decides to quit paying child support, it is not uncommon for the other to find him or herself in financial straits.

This is the case for the ex-wife of a former NBA player who was forced to go on welfare after the athlete refused to pay child support. At one point in his career, the man was believed to have made $750,000 a year, but was still not making the required child support payments. He eventually left the NBA and played professionally overseas in Italy, France and Israel where he made between $90,000 and $180,000 a year. During this time, he was supposed to be making child support payments of $3750 a month.

He left his three children behind in the states, now ages 23, 21 and 20, when he went abroad to play ball. The 21-year-old says that before his father was arrested, he had not seen him since he was in elementary school.

The man recently appeared in a federal court where he was ordered to spend nine months in prison for failure to make over a half a million dollars in child support payments. He will also be required to pay $661,277 in restitution.

This is a case of a selfish father who was not responsible enough to provide for his own children. Hopefully the children and their mother will be able to use the court ordered restitution to help them better their lives and give them opportunities they didn't have before.
