Guardian Angels founder on trial over child support payments

When one parents seeks a modification in the amount of child support he or she is required to pay in North Carolina, he or she must ask the court for approval based on a variety of reasons. One is a change in circumstances that are substantial. This may include changes in the parent’s employment, income or health or a change in the child’s health. If either parent’s income has changed by at least 15%, a modification in the amount of child support could also be warranted.

This is the case for Curtis Sliwa, the man who began the civilian crime fighting group, Guardian Angels. In his heyday, Sliwa was making $688,000 a year. He says he now makes $120,000 a year and can no longer afford to pay his ex-wife $12,000 a month in child support for their 9-year-old son with special needs.

He recently appeared in court where he told the support magistrate that he is in such financial straits that he had to borrow money from his father in order to pay for his divorce last year. He also claims that he has no assets or savings.

Sliwa’s ex-wife alleges that he is a liar who gave nearly $500,000 to his mistress while they were married. The mistress she speaks of is the mother of Sliwa’s 2- and 5-year-old sons who were conceived using in-vitro fertilization. Sliwa is now living with the woman and his two sons.

In cases such as these, it is important to have an experienced lawyer on your side. Doing so can ensure that you get the proper amount of child support to which you are entitled.
