Number of divorce filings rise in January

Through the years, there seems to be a trend developing as to the most popular times of the year to get a divorce in North Carolina. Although experts say there really is no really great time to get a divorce, there are two times during the year that see an uptick in the number of couples splitting up. These times are not surprisingly after the holiday season and at the end of summer.

January has historically been seen as the month with the most divorce filings. It has even been nicknamed, “Divorce Month.” Researchers looked at divorces that were filed in the United States between 2008 and 2011 and found that a large percentages of divorces occurred in January.

The site where the research was performed also looked at keywords used in searches. Keywords and phrases such as “divorce” and “child custody” were used in searches 50% more in January as they were in December.

Experts believe this rise in divorce filings is due to the fact that very few people want to disrupt their family life and file for divorce before the holiday season. Many couples simply grin and bear it in order to be together with their children during the holidays. Another reason couples wait to divorce until January is for tax purposes.

If you are considering a divorce, you would be well advised to speak with a family law attorney before you make your decision. Doing so can enable you to be fully educated about your rights and what will happen in the divorce.
