Domestic violence victims may benefit from safety plan

Victims of domestic violence in Ballantyne, North Carolina often worry for their safety even after they get away from their abuser. This is why it is important for victims to be educated on their rights and the resources available to help them.

One resource that can help domestic violence victims is coming up with a safety plan. This plan can include protective orders and ways to keep the victim's identity and personal information private so that the abuser does not have access to it. This is the idea behind the Attorney General's Address Confidentiality Program. Since 2003, a total of 981 victims have joined the program that allows their mail to be sent to a substitute address and then forwarded to their home address, which is kept confidential. This address can be used by the victim for a variety of things, including when he or she applies for a driver license and registers to vote.

Safety plans are put into place in an effort to reduce the number of domestic violence incidents in North Carolina. These efforts seem to be paying off, although there is still work to be done. In 2012, 122 people were killed in domestic violence murders. That number dropped to 108 in 2013. The number of females killed was 62 and the number of males was 46.

If you have been the victim of domestic violence and would like to know how a safety plan can help protect you and your family, you may wish to speak with an attorney experienced in family law.
