Educating our clients about divorce is important to us

When a relationship can no longer continue, it is usually very clear to all parties involved. However, the spouses who come to us at Epperson Law, PLLC, are not always sure whether they are ready for divorce yet. This is normal. The decision to get a divorce is a serious one and it should not be taken lightly. It should not be taken without first educating yourself about the ins and outs of divorce.

3 things you should know about divorce in North Carolina

You can't stand your spouse and you are ready to end your marriage. If you live in North Carolina, you might be shocked to learn about how divorce works. Our state still requires that you go through a separation before you can get a divorce. The separation gives you time away from your ex, and it is also a chance for you and your ex to hash out the divorce settlement. Here are some things you should know if you plan on filing for divorce in North Carolina.

What if a parent misses a designated child visitation time?

North Carolina parents live busy lives, and sometimes it's hard to juggle schedules and -- for non-custodial parents -- this might cause them to miss a designated child visitation time. However, other times, missing an appointment with one's children is the result of a parent's irresponsibility and/or lack of interest in his or her children. In these cases, the North Carolina custodial parent will be faced with the following dilemma: Should parents take legal action to initiate a consequence to the non-custodial parent if he or she constantly misses designated child visitation appointments?

Are shotgun marriages on the rise?

Do you know what the phrase "shotgun wedding" actually means? Apparently, it refers to a father with a shotgun forcing the boyfriend of his pregnant daughter to get married following a pregnancy. These days, the term is just a figurative expression for any couple who suddenly decides to get married after a pregnancy.

Do elderly divorcees face increased heart attack risks?

A lot of North Carolina residents are waking up to the fact that their marriages are broken late in life. Well into their retirement years, these individuals are deciding to leave their marriages to bring more happiness and well-being into their lives. However, research shows how important it is that elderly spouses divorce in a way that is as peaceful and stress-free as possible -- and that newly divorced ex-spouses must take every opportunity to safeguard their health.
