Good news: Mecklenburg County experiences decline in divorces

The last place on Earth you'd expect to get a divorce would be in a town called Weddington. Nevertheless, Mecklenburg County processes more divorces annually than all other counties in the state of North Carolina. Not to fear, however, as this is probably since Mecklenburg is the biggest county our state. Also, the good news is that divorce figures are close to record lows.

In 2015, Mecklenburg County had 3,388 divorces. This is the smallest number of divorces since 1998 -- and this is in spite of the fact that the Charlotte area has experienced a substantial population rise during the last couple decades. In 2014, the number of divorces in Mecklenburg was 4,454. The peak, however, was in 2005, when it reached 4,960.

On the other side of the coin, marriage figures are on the rise. In 2016, there were 7,239 marital unions, in 2015 there were 7,020, and in 2014 there were 6,621.

Social scientists, psychologists and divorce lawyers have different theories about the decline in divorce numbers. Many attribute the drop to the simple fact that fewer people are getting married in the first place. Furthermore, some say that people are waiting until they are older -- and until after they have tried cohabiting for some time -- before they get married. Regardless of the reason, lower divorce numbers are good news for couples who decide to tie the knot.

As for Weddington couples who decide to "untie" the knot, these spouses are wise to consult with a family law attorney before beginning the process. Indeed, some have equated representing yourself in your divorce to the idea of doing your own dental work. It's painful, stressful and you might make some big mistakes. Having an experienced lawyer on your side, on the other hand, will help you ensure that you do not experience unforeseen difficulties later on down the road.
