Ex-wife of former Dodgers owner ordered to pay his attorney fees

When a divorcing couple in Ballantyne, North Carolina cannot come to an agreement on the terms of their divorce, the process can become long and drawn out. When this happens, legal fees can start to really add up. This is why some couples choose to put provisions in their settlements that state that if the terms of the divorce are contested by either party, that person is responsible to pay for the legal fees of the other person.

This is the case for Jamie McCourt, ex-wife of Frank McCourt, the former owner of the Dodgers. Although Jaimie was awarded a number of luxury homes and $131 million in the divorce settlement, she contested the settlement last year, saying that her ex-husband had underestimated the value of the Dodgers in the divorce. The couple divorced in 2012 after almost 30 years of marriage.

Because the two had a stipulation in their divorce settlement that if either of them contested the agreement, that person would be responsible for paying the other person’s legal fees, Frank sued Jaimie. A judge recently tentatively ruled that Jaimie will need to pay her ex-husband $1.9 million for his attorney’s fees.

If you are considering contesting the terms of your divorce, it is important that you know the possible ramifications of doing so. You may wish to seek out a family law attorney who can review your case and explain your options. A lawyer can also help you successfully navigate the legal process and work to ensure your interests are protected.
