Adopting as a single parent? Get your support system in place

Adopting a child as a single parent is something you may want to consider. While you will be faced with a variety of challenges, the end result is well worth it.

All parents need a strong support system. This is even more so the case if you are a single parent navigating the adoption system. You are taking on a big responsibility, which means you want to have all your details lined up.

Here are some important questions to address in regards to your support system:

-- Do you feel comfortable calling friends and/or family for help if you need it?

-- Are your friends and family supportive of your decision to adopt a child as somebody who is not married?

-- How do your loved ones feel about the child you are interested in adopting?

-- Who can you rely on to help raise the child when you are in a bind?

-- Who can you trust to act as guardian in the event of your untimely death?

These are the types of questions you need to answer if you are single and interested in adopting. You may not know exactly what the future holds, but it's good to realize that you have a support system in place that is more than willing to help you make everything work.

There is nothing easy about adoption, but the process can be joyful and exciting when you know what you are doing. Make sure you have a support system that will be by your side every step of the way.
