Stevie J. in trouble over $1 million in unpaid child support

Although it may seem that celebrities can get away with anything they want, no matter how rich and famous someone may be, they are not above the law in North Carolina. This is especially true in cases regarding child support. Those in the spotlight aren't allowed to get away with not supporting their children, no matter what their celebrity status is.

This fact doesn't keep many from trying. The latest celebrity to find himself in hot water for delinquent child support is musician Stevie J. He has two children with ex-girlfriend Carol Bennett. An arrest warrant was recently issued by the New York City Police Department for his failure to pay child support. In 14 years, Stevie J. has paid just over $132,000 dollars to Bennett. He currently owes her $1,158,391.

Bennett has retained a lawyer to help her fight to get the proper child support to which she is entitled. Her lawyer said that Stevie J. is potentially in a lot of trouble with the law because when he left New York to live in Georgia, he owed Bennett unpaid child support arrears. According to the 1992 Child Support Recovery Act, leaving a state when you have more than $10,000 in unpaid child support constitutes a crime and can be punishable by the law.

Bennett did the right thing by hiring a lawyer to help her fight for her right to the child support she is owed. Hopefully she will be able to collect the unpaid child support and be able to provide for her children in a way she sees fit.
