How can you avoid depression following your divorce?

Dealing with the consequences of a divorce is often not nearly as cut-and-dry as many in Charlotte may think. In a recent national survey done by the National Fatherhood initiative, it was revealed that 73 percent of respondents cited a lack of commitment as the reason they chose to divorce, according to MSN Living.That perceived lack of commitment can cause a great deal of hurt on both sides, and these feelings often create a common side effect of divorce: depression.

Depression is something you definitely don’t want to have to deal with during divorce proceedings. Tensions may already be running high between couples, and throwing depression into that mix may only serve to complicate matters further. Thus, the community-based network Mental Health America gives the following suggestions in dealing with depression following the end of a marriage:

  • Don’t be frightened by your feelings: Accept the fact that it’s normal to run through a range of emotions following a divorce.
  • Keep the company of others: Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have to go through this alone.
  • Take care of yourself: Exercise, eat well, and eliminate stress wherever you can.
  • Avoid disputes with your ex: Realize that arguments during divorce proceedings only amplify the negative feelings associated with you marriage.
  • Take a break: Give yourself time to grieve for your marriage and to get excited about your future,

Your divorce can be one of the most difficult things you’ve ever had to go through. You can ease that difficulty by understanding how to properly deal with your emotions. Doing so ensures that depression will not hamper your divorce proceedings.
